Description
Basil is an annual, herbaceous, aromatic plant probably native to India or Iran. Most commercially available varieties of basil are sweet basil, which is also used in Italian cuisine. In cooking it gives a wonderful flavor to red sauces mainly for pasta, various roasts, salads and soups, however it is the main ingredient for the famous Italian pesto sauce. Basil is also known for its medicinal use as an antispasmodic, appetizer, for the secretion of milk and as a stomach soothing.
