Description
The mastic plant, pistacia lentiscus, thrives throughout the Mediterranean. However, on the island of Chios and more specifically in the southern part of the island, a special variety of pistil is cultivated, the mastic pistachio (specifically Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia), from which the natural resin or mastic is extracted. Since 1997 it has been classified as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product. Mastic is the basis of many cosmetic products, it is also added to alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to add aroma, but also in confectionery and cooking it is used in powder form for its unique aroma and taste.
